A Home of Her Own: How Women Are Shaping South Africa’s Property Market
This Women’s Month holds particular significance for South Africa. On 9 August 2026, the country marks 70 years since more than 20,000 women marched to the Union Buildings in protest against the extension of the pass laws.
Their courage represented far more than resistance to an unjust system. It was a powerful declaration that women should have the freedom to make decisions, shape their own futures and take their rightful place in society.
Seventy years later, that same spirit of independence can increasingly be seen in South Africa’s property market.
More women are buying on their own terms
For a growing number of South African women, homeownership is no longer something that must wait for marriage, a partner or the “perfect” stage of life.
According to ooba Home Loans, single women accounted for 53% of its first-time homebuyer applications in 2025. The average salary of female applicants has also increased considerably over the past decade, helping more women pursue property ownership independently.
These figures reflect an important shift: women are not only participating in the property market—they are actively shaping it.
They are purchasing first homes, investing in rental properties, upgrading as their families grow and selling properties that no longer serve their needs. Many are approaching property as both a place to live and an important part of their long-term financial planning.
Why owning a home matters
A home is naturally an emotional purchase, but it can also provide something deeply practical: stability.
Property ownership may offer greater control over one’s living environment, protection from unexpected rental increases and the opportunity to build equity over time. For women supporting families, planning for retirement or creating financial retirement or independence, that security can be especially meaningful.
It can also create a legacy. A property may become an asset that supports children, provides future rental income or gives the next generation a stronger financial foundation.
However, empowerment through property does not mean rushing into a purchase. It means having access to the right information and feeling confident enough to make informed decisions.
Begin with knowledge, not pressure
Buying a home independently can feel intimidating, but the process becomes much more manageable when it is broken into practical steps.
A prospective buyer should begin by understanding her credit profile, monthly affordability and the additional costs associated with purchasing a property. Bond prequalification can provide a realistic price range before the property search begins.
The right home should also suit more than the buyer’s current lifestyle. Location, security, maintenance requirements, resale potential and future affordability all deserve careful consideration.
For women who already own property, Women’s Month is also an opportunity to review how that asset fits into their broader plans. Has the property grown in value? Does it still meet the household’s needs? Could it provide rental income, or might selling unlock the next chapter?
Professional property advice can help turn those questions into a clear and achievable plan.
A foundation for the future
This Women’s Month, we honour the women who opened doors for future generations—and those who continue walking through new doors today.
Every woman’s property journey will look different. For one, it may mean receiving the keys to her first apartment. For another, it may be selling a family home, purchasing an investment property or creating a secure space in which her family can thrive.
Whatever the goal, a home of her own can represent far more than bricks and mortar. It can represent choice, independence, security and a future built on her own terms.
That is something worth celebrating—not only during Women’s Month, but throughout the year.
